About startup weekend:

Startup Weekend has been introduced to over 15,000 entrepreneurs in more than 100 cities around the world. Founded in June 2007, Startup Weekend provides a platform to pitch an idea, build the concept and present it to the audience in around 50 hours. At least 500 companies have been created over the lifetime of the worldwide event raising more than $2MK in financing.

Startup Weekend attendees are made up from the width and breadth of the startup and entrepreneurial community – from mobile and server developers to technical writers and lawyers, and even investors – or people like you. The audience consists of individuals who have a burning idea and are looking to put it into code, as well as those who are looking for team members to join their project and would like to "test the waters".

This Startup Weekend will be held in The Peres Center for Peace's facility. The event is planned to be significantly larger with 160 attendees and will offer more services than before. The Center will work with the management team in bringing Israeli & Arab entrepreneurs and "startupists" from the ICT community in Israel as well as the Palestinian Authority.

How to use/ setup log4net

Share

For a few times I needed to add log4Net to projects I have been working on and occasionally I forget how to configure log4net in my project or website.

So, I’m writing it down and hope it can help others as well :)

1- Add reference to log4net

2- Create log4net.config.xml file under App_Data/Configuration/log4net directory. (or any directory you would like)

3- log4net.config.xml file should look like this – make sure to update the  logging level

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>

<log4net>

    <appender name="XMLFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender">

        <file value="e:\\temp\\log4net\\BLOND_MOBILE\\root.xml"/>

        <appendToFile value="true"/>

        <rollingStyle value="Size"/>

        <maxSizeRollBackups value="-1"/>

        <maximumFileSize value="5MB"/>

        <countDirection value="1"/>

        <locationinfo value="false"/>

        <layout type="log4net.Layout.XmlLayout">

            <param name="Prefix" value=""/>

            <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c [%x] - %m%n"/>

        </layout>

    </appender>

    <appender name="LogFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender,log4net">

        <file value="e:\\temp\\log4net\\BLOND_MOBILE\\root.txt"/>

        <appendToFile value="true"/>

        <rollingStyle value="Size"/>

        <maxSizeRollBackups value="-1"/>

        <maximumFileSize value="5MB"/>

        <countDirection value="1"/>

        <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout,log4net">

            <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c [%x] - %m%n"/>

        </layout>

    </appender>

    <appender name="BLOND_MOBILEFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender,log4net">

        <file value="e:\\temp\\log4net\\BLOND_MOBILE\\BLOND_MOBILE.txt"/>

        <appendToFile value="true"/>

        <rollingStyle value="Size"/>

        <maxSizeRollBackups value="-1"/>

        <maximumFileSize value="5MB"/>

        <countDirection value="1"/>

        <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout,log4net">

            <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c [%x] - %m%n"/>

        </layout>

    </appender>

  <appender name="APIAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender,log4net">

   <file value="e:\\temp\\log4net\\BLOND_MOBILE\\API.txt"/>

  <appendToFile value="true"/>

  <rollingStyle value="Size"/>

  <maxSizeRollBackups value="-1"/>

  <maximumFileSize value="5MB"/>

  <countDirection value="1"/>

  <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout, log4net">

    <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d [%t] %-5p %c [%x] - %m%n"/>

  </layout>

  </appender>

    <logger name="BLOND_MOBILE">

        <level value="DEBUG"/>

        <appender-ref ref="BLOND_MOBILEFileAppender"/>

<appender-ref ref="RemoteSyslogAppender"/>

    </root>

</log4net>

4- Define log4net config location in the web.config (or any other place if its not a web app). Do this by adding this line to the web config

<add key="log4netConfigFilePath" value="~/App_Data/Configuration/log4net/log4net.config.xml"/>

log4net.Config.XmlConfigurator.ConfigureAndWatch(log4netConfig);

6 – Get an instance of the logger, by passign teh logger name. which you defined in the log4net config file

Cheap calls for BlackBerry using JAJAH

JAJAH now supports calling from you Blackberry. In order to make JAJAH calls via your BlackBerry, you need to download the JAJAH Mobile for BlackBerry application. The application supports BlackBerry software version 4.3 and above.

The main advantage of using the application over the JAJAH web site is that the application can access your address book and call directly from your contacts and call log making it very easy to place a cheap JAJAH call.

To Install JAJAH Mobile for BlackBerry OTA, Open your BlackBerry browser and go to http://tiny.cc/jajahbb. the application will automatically be downloaded and installed on your BlackBerry handset.

Tweet to Talk using JAJAH

Share

JAJAH TwitterAs twitter has become a massive player in the internet and social media world, it only seems logic to enable you to have a bit more features than only allowing 140 characters. JAJAH puts the voice into twitter, and for FREE.

JAJAH has launched a new product JAJAH@Call, that allows you to make short phone calls to your twitter friends, without needing to know their phone number and give out your phone number. you can only call friends that follow you in order to protect your privacy.  I actually think that this is the most important feature since you don't need to revile your phone number  to twitter friends.

JAJAH@CALL  is very easy to use, all you need to do is type : @call @userName and you will receive a call to your pre-defined phone number in your JAJAH account. There is no need to download anything, just use twitter as you always do.

This product is currently in beta and for a small number of users. Unfortunately only users with US numbers can use this service (at least for now).

If you are a JAJAH user  go here to set up your account to make twitter calls, if not, you can register to JAJAH here.

For more info, please visit  this link, and watch the below video

Waze Review

Share

Waze navigation The first time I have encountered Waze was about a year ago, when I met the founders and the company name was LinqMap. Right then, I loved their idea. The main idea is that its user generated maps, making the maps free of charge and updated. In Wazes case, updated means that in addition to  have updated roads its also updated with traffic, speed cameras and even police cars. The data is user generated, making the user benefit and give back to the “Waze comminute”.  The traffic is updated by the minute,unlike traffic servers that other navigation applications use. The destination route is calculated using the traffic data , saving you allot of hours on the roads…

I have used the application on Nokia 5800, which is a Symbian touch screen device. The application I use is the Hebrew version and can be downloaded from m.waze.co.il. for an English version you can go to m.waze.com. the application is still in Beta and is FREE.

what I like:

  1. Easy download, just go from your mobile to m.waze.co.il, the application will  automatically be installed.
  2. Fast re- routing. In allot of navigation applications you need to move way out from the route before the application calculates the new rout. In this case the route is calculated fast.
  3. Routing is depended on the traffic. When there are traffic jams, the application will calculate the best route depending on traffic, saving you allot of time. This is my favorite feature. I use it to and back from work almost every day.
  4. Notification of speed camera or a police car.
  5. Notification of other Waze users. Yes, I know its not very useful, but its fun seeing who else is using the application and is near you. In addition, this feature has a huge potential, such as making the application more of a social application, allowing users to know the location of their friends.

Waze speed cam waze bad UI

Things to improve:

  1. The time of the route is never right. Allot of times I see 20 min and I find myself driving more than 50 min. I would expect the application to take into consideration the traffic, since it has this data anyway.
  2. No option for using only toll free roads. when having a long drive the application always takes me via road 6 – an expensive high way. The route is always out of the way, making extra rounds to get to the road 6 high way. This is very annoying.
  3. Allot of time the “voice” tell you to take a left or a right after you have already passed the turn.
  4. No option to see the route that was calculated. The only way to do so is to scroll on the touch screen, which is very annoying if the route is more than 10 minutes. After you focus out or change the location of the map, there is no quick way to see where you are currently driving. The only solution I found is to calculate the route again, making you use data (internet connection).
  5. Display traffic notification for places you passed already or are near the route corridor but not on your way. This is useless information and also consumes data.
  6. UI needs improvement. For example the keyboard should be more esthetic or they should use the devices key board. Another example is the icons on the screen that can be used as buttons and not only for notifications.

To summarize: Waze is great as a beta and a free navigation application. I would only use it to avoid traffic and to get best routes depending on traffic. If you don't know the destination you cannot relay on it since it always takes you to road 6 and if you don't know the way you can get lost or drive in circles. So, if the purpose is to navigate to an unknown destination, the beta fails. still the roads are very updated and the routes are good and time saving.

Blogger: How to reduce the number of labels in Blogger (by frequency)

Share

When moving from Wordpress to Blogger I found that blogger only has labels where wordpress has categories and tags.

Needleless to say,I found myself with tons of labels. I only wanted to display in my blog the labels that had allot of posts, In my case I wanted to display all labels that have 3 and above posts. This is what I did:

  1. Add the label widget
  2. Set the label widget to be sorted by frequency
  3. Change the code: go to “layout”
  4. Click on “Edit HTML” (I recommend backing up your template)
  5. Check the box “Expand Widget Templates”
  6. Find the label widget (use ctrl F and look for the word label1)
  7. Find the line: <b:loop values='data:labels' var='label'>
  8. Paste this line: <b:if cond='data:label.count &gt; 2'> right below the above line. (note that you can change the number 2 to any number you like)
  9. Now we need to close the b tag, so find the line </b:loop> and above it paste this line: </b:if>
  10. Click “save template”

Lady Gaga- Live in Tel Aviv Israel

Share

Lady Gaga live Israel Wow, what a show! was so good!!!. The only bad thing about it that it was only an hour making me want more, much more.

Lady Gaga is not only hot but sooooo talented! I’m not talking only about the way she moves and dresses, but she has a wonderful voice and really knows how to use it. She also played the piano very well.  Lady Gaga’s how was much better than the Depeche Mode show.

The show was very professional, all the small details where planed, starting from the video art, to the close and dancing. The sound was very good, something that most shows in Israel don't have. She gave a great performance and described how much she likes Israel and the Humus. enough words, below are 2  live songs and pics from Lady Gaga in Tel Aviv Israel. Enjoy!
